Organized by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), FLL (First Lego League) is a global program created to get kids excited about science and technology. FLL utilizes theme-based challenges to engage kids in research, problem solving, and engineering. The program emphasizes contributions of others, friendly sportsmanship, learning, and community involvement. The Boys & Girls Club of Antelope Valley formed the FLL Robotics Team with the goals of encouraging more kids into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers and to help give our kids the skills needed to compete in our global society.
Each FLL challenge involves two areas: the robotics areas focuses on a team’s ability to design, build and program a robot that accomplish specific missions; and, the research project area focuses on a team’s ability to research a real-life problem and create a unique solution for it.
Kids ages 9-14 (as of January 1st of the current year) can join the WM Coolbots for free as part of your Boys & Girls Club membership. The competition team runs from September to December and practices weekly with practices being more frequent closest to competition time.
